Seems slightly unnecessary as having to work so hard at saving money is energy expending; precious energy that could be better spent studying or having fun (also known as stress reduction for those who need a good excuse). After all that's what loans are for. However, definitely points for trying.

Some of the spin seems unecessary (are you really thriving, and if you are why are you planning to do this just temporarily, i.e. until you finish college), but it is good to explore the possibility of living life differently. I like the general idea, but it's not quite my thing. I do enjoy the finer things in life. And you have to be on a mission in order to force yourself not to be able to. Or just poor I guess; where choice is close enough to smell, but usually just out of reach.

If you were a poor father/mother would you sacrifice the time with your children in order to provide them a better future?

Can money buy happiness?

Interesting article. Partially, because of a lack of focus and partially due to lack of time/funds.

I randomly ran into a page listing someone's photo setup (link) and also showcasing a great illustration of how much difference lighting (= good flash) can make (link). In this case I do not think the book is actually worth obtaining, but I did find the following observation (from the Amazon.com review) fascinating:

"Turkle shows how playing with gender in cyberspace can shape a person's real-life understanding of gender. Especially telling are the examples of the man who finds it easier to be assertive when playing a woman, because he believes male assertiveness is now frowned upon while female assertiveness is considered hip, and the woman who has the opposite response, believing that it is easier to be aggressive when she plays a male, because as a woman she would be considered "bitchy." Without taking sides, Turkle points out how both have expanded their emotional range."

While these observations are by no means universal I do think they reflect some of the unease and inferiority people can feel in their own gender.

"Branson offers $25m climate prize"

My idol is the business world is Richard Branson, the founder of the Virgin empire. But as I was cleaning and organizing my computer I found this oldie-but-goodie.

Not to say that Ecstasy is completely benign, but it goes to show just how much fear-mongering was happening at the time this drug hit it big in Europe and US. It would be nice if research was allowed on all drugs so it can be clearly established what effects drugs have on people so everyone would be able to make informed choices. Seeing as our gov'ts don't deem us adult enough to handle these kinds of decisions they're choosing to ban them and use propaganda in order to make sure they stay banned.

Some day though...

Fascinating protest

Kristian von Hornsleth, a Danish artist, donates livestock to Ugandan villagers in exchange for them taking up his last name. The Dems took both the House and the Senate on Tuesday!! :-) Let's hope they'll actually do something productive with that power!

Also, the ballot measures spoke about how people feel about certain issues. I was pleasantly surprised to find that every state that voted on lifting the minimum wage approved that measure. Also, parental notification was turned down! I was surprised to see that two states (Nevada and Colorado) voted on making marijuana legal and while the measures were soundly defeated in both states it's a victory to see them on the ballot in the first place and to see that 44 and 40% of the voting public said yes! Astounding!!

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2006/pages/results/ballot.measures/

Same-sex marriage took a sound beating in every state in which it was voted on. The saddest was in Colorado where "Domestic Partnership" was defeated even though it clearly stayed clear of marriage itself.

"Would legalize domestic partnerships, providing same-sex couples the opportunity to obtain the legal protections and responsibilities granted to married couples under Colorado law. The measure specifies that domestic partnerships are not marriage and do not change the public policy of the state, which defines marriage as only the union of one man and one woman."

C'mon Colorado. Have some tolerance for those who are not just like you! Especially when they are just looking for some of the same legal protection for their partners that everyone else gets.

Morning-after pill to go over the counter?

Who would've thunk it - your politicians do represent you! If you have any inclination towards world politics this is priceless!

"Apparently not expecting an open mike to pick up his remarks, Bush told Blair: "See the irony is what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this s___ and it's over.""

Of course, it's not as simple as that - there's a reason Iran and Syria are doing this s___. They developed a vaccine against HPV that will eliminate most cases of cervical cancer and genital warts in women.

That's great! What about them boys? Granted, we don't have a cervix. But we're not naturally immune, you know! So, how 'bout it?

And while you're at it how about you rout out some of the other nasties that inhibit the nasty. Or just some of the other nasties, if we're into quantity over quality. I think the Catholic church should donate its endowment towards medical research for this very purpose. "Yea, come to me my flock and be healed!" Now, there's something that'll make you believe. But then they appear stalwart on waiting for the savior.

And hence we come to two men who should be granted sainthood for doing just that - Mr. William Henry Gates III and Warren E. A lot of our modern electronics were invented or designed by them. For example, micro hard drives (hello Ipods) and using copper in microprocessor design to name but a few, off the top of my head. They've been working on nanodrives for some time (basically microscopic punch cards that would allow for a massive increase in storage). And now they developed a new way to design microprocessors that will boost their processing power by up to 100 fold! This is an awesome breakthrough badly needed to propel our communication and processing networks to the next stage. As much as we try to build up our little world and pretend that we're in control the truth is we never are. That truck is coming for you when it's time and that's it. What a shame!

Having recently witnessed 15-20 minutes of commercials in a Santa Cruz movie theater I must say that this is a disturbing trend. Is nothing sacred? Will no venue be left alone?

What's next? Will paintings start carrying a little corporate logo in the corner to remind everyone that art is dead. Huge infrastructure projects are always cool. This one will provide huge amounts of electricity (85 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity a year - compare that with 4 billion kilowatt-hours that the Hoover dams produces) and significantly reduce or completely eliminate flooding in the Yangtze river plains. There is also a related project in the works to channel some of the Yangtze river water up to Beijing which is in a fairly arid area and yet growing steadily.

I just don't understand how people (especially Westerners) can bitch about this project. Yes, there are some negatives (huge relocations of people, flooding of some historical artifacts), but the positives are so overwhelming that it would be just plain stupid not to do it.

Now that the West is all developed it is a bit too quick to judge other nations trying to develop. You always hear environmentalists cringing when projects like these are proposed. It's complaints like that which make me lose a lot of respect for the environmental movement. On two recent major issues he served as the voice of reason, in contrast to the apparently hot-headed Congress and Senate. During the heated discussion on Dubai Ports taking over some American ports he kept asking for calm and pointing out that we must work with our allies, that the deal has been checked and that the actual security will be done by American services. Now, he is making similarly calming statement about immigration reform.

"The immigration debate should be conducted in a civil and dignified way" and

"No one should play on people's fears or try to pit neighbors against each other," Bush said. "No one should pretend that immigrants are threats to America's identity because immigrants have shaped America's identity." and

"No one should claim that immigrants are a burden on our economy because the work and enterprise of immigrants helps sustain our economy," the president said. "We should not give in to pessimism. If we work together I am confident we can meet our duty to fix our immigration system and deliver a bill that protects our people, upholds our laws and makes our people proud."

Wow! This is a stark contrast to the old Bush we used to know. Is it his low approval ratings, growth or something else? Either way I am impressed. This is exactly what the president is supposed to do - lead this great nation! I think this is the first time during his entire term that I've seen true leadership from him.

Unfortunately it comes at a time when his approval ratings are at a record low (hovering around ~39%) and so he doesn't hold that much weight anymore - especially with Congress and the Senate which are up for a re-election this year and if anything are looking to distance themselves from an unpopular president. Still, it is a breath of fresh air and I commend him for it!

Goodness

It always warms my heart when I hear of good deeds. Lets see what happens.

After a 10 minute party of clapping and superficial greetings the President took the podium. Good speech so far. It's a shame our "commitment to democracy and freedom" is limited to small countries that we can bully. You wanna set lofty goals to spread democracy? How about China and Russia?! :-) Of course, they have nuclear weapons and are otherwise economically strong so we can't really tell them what to do. But sure, we will go and undermine Burma's regime in order to install democracy. Don't get me wrong - I applaud the thought and effort. It's a good cause. Thanks to that good cause we have changed numerous regimes over the years, many times bringing to power the irresponsible, the destructive and certainly anything but democratic governments the world over. Let freedom ring! Across America at least.

6:25pm - Do not question me! Or my wars. This particular marine did not and he died. You wanna die? Follow me! Let freedom ring as we march from nation to nation ensuring America-friendly regimes are left behind.

The Bush administration enthusiasm for democracy reminds me a lot of Brandon Fraser's character in "The Quiet American". He plays the enthusiastic CIA agent supplying weapons to a rebel army in hopes of speeding up regime change. This is all done in the name of spreading democracy (even as the resulting bombings kill many innocents). As he explains this to his friend, an older British journalist (brilliantly played by Michael Caine), he receives a poignant rhetorical question in return: "It's not that simple. So, you give them democracy. And what happens when they elect the communists?" Exactly.

I can't wait to see whether he will talk about Palestine. That is exactly what happened there.

6:32pm - Iran responds: "Dear American president, go fuck yourself. We overthrew your puppet government 26 years ago"

6:35pm - Aha... here we go. Domestic spying. I like how he stressed "international". *lol* And they focus the camera on Hillary Clinton as the entire room applauds - she shakes her head with a smirk. I'd vote for her just for that. Who are all these people clapping? Do all of them support the Patriot Act and domestic spying of American citizens? How about you stand up one by one and tell us why. And then we won't vote for you this Fall.

6:37pm - Freedom is on the march? Aha. See above.

6:39pm - Way to bring down protectionism!! My hat off for that.

6:41pm - Will he call for more tax cuts? Yup, calls for tax cuts to stay. And half of the room stands up in ovation! :)

6:42pm - I'd love to see him list some of those 140 programs he is going to cut. But that wouldn't be pretty. Heh, 14 billion. What huge savings!

6:44pm - Go Democrats!!! That was really cute. They all stood up when Bush said Congress killed his reform of Social Security.

6:45pm - Putting aside partisan politics? Now that is disguisting coming from a man whose adminstration has done nothing but aggressively kill bipartisanship by screwing all the people who were open to it.

6:47pm - Affordable healthcare? No such thing in a country that provides the best healthcare in the world, to those who can afford it. You can either have the best healthcare (for some) or good healthcare for all.

6:49pm - Oil. Here we go. "Advanced Energy Initiative"? Hmmm... nothing new really here. We'll build more coal and nuclear power plants and some solar. Pffttt.. whatever. That ain't gonna help. Ethanol? Whatever. Replacing 75% of our oil consumption from Middle East by 2025? How? Some fancy words, but no plan.

How about you call for some sacrifice? How about you increase the tax on gas? How about you implement an SUV tax? And fuel consumption tax for all cars running on less than 30mpg.

6:51pm - "American Competitiveness Initiative"? Strenthen education? OK. That's cool. R&D deduction? That's good. Canada does that.

How about you strengthen the import of great people from all over the world? Import the best. A lot of American innovation has come from the US harvesting the cream of the crop from around the world. Why pick from a pool of 300 milion when you can pick from a pool of 6 billion!

6:56pm - The American Empire will reign says Bush.

6:58pm - Indeed. Both O'Connor and Rehnquist.

Standing ovations seem to be pretty popular. The whole speech seems like a series of workouts Denis Leary style: "The Chairmaster. I sit down. I get up. I sit down. I get up." It's the new gov't recommended workout initiative to curb obesity.

7:00pm - OK, I totally want to see Hillary Clinton introduce our new first lady Bill Clinton during her State of the Union speech! :-))

7:05pm - It's over. Nothing too crazy.

Children tell: HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHO TO MARRY?

HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHO TO MARRY?...
( 1 ) You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Shock and awe has set in as the political leaders and the media try to figure out how to start anew with a government formed by an organization that US, EU and Israel have been trying very hard to marginalize and destroy. There are a lot of disparaging comments regarding Hamas and this new goverment largely due to the violent zeal of Hamas towards seeing Israel destroyed.

There is a lot of confusion in my mind as to why this is such a big shock? Hamas had strong showing in the pre-election polls. Fatah is extremely corrupt and inefficient! While Fatah hasn't done diddly squat for the people of Palestine Hamas was building schools, hospitals and churches! I strongly disapprove of Hamas' violent ways, but given the choice between Fatah and Hamas I would've voted Hamas too!

Hamas should do a lot of good things for Palestine such as establish law and order and improve the lives of ordinary Palestinians. The downside will most likely be less freedom as they are certain to introduce some religious restrictions on the populace. Considering the disparaging situation that is a good short term trade-off. One can only hope that Hamas will respect the democracy that brought them to power and abstain from setting up an Iranian-style theocracy.

For couples with a gamer (or two)...

First, WoW as a birth control device.
http://www.premisedenied.com/img/blog/WOW.wmv

And then a serenade for the couples with an Xbox.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1329362959167995041

aussielicious

don't ask how i find these sites, i am not sure. considering most of the regulars here are women i consider it a humanitarian part of my blog. so, enjoy the new boytoy of the week ladies! It rates based on three factors, but I think it says a lot about what kinds of cars people are generally interested in. Pretty much what you'd expect, but it was interesting to note that Saturn was at a high #4 and Volkwagen at a low #16. Maybe due to other factors, but I've only heard bad stuff about Saturn quality and it seems to me Volkswagen has some solid products with high popularity (Bug, Jetta), especially amongst women.

Any thoughts on that? German troops started singing carols at midnight; shortly afterwards British troops across no-man's land did the same. They called out for a cease fire, and slowly they emerged from their wet, cold, miserable trenches to meet in the middle and share brandy, smokes and family photographs. The dead were safely retrieved, buried, and grieved over. Some say there was even a football match until the ball deflated on some barbed wire."

And then of course the ugliness creeps back in...

"The Christmas Trust was not officially sanctioned, and military brass were frustrated by the show of civility. In subsequent years of the war, they made sure that troops were rotated to avoid friendliness, and bombings were thereafter especially harsh on the Holiday of Peace."

"Another Year" by Sven Davis from the Santa Cruz "Good Times" - a great weekly publication on happenings around town and other

But still... it is great how people are just people. In three weeks her approval rating went up 3% as she raised taxes (by abolishing tax exemptions) and pleased the European Union through positive Summit negotiations (including giving 100 million euros due to eastern German provinces to poorer Polish provinces as an act of good will). She also had a positive meeting with Rice and the economy is looking better due to improved exports (although this last one really should be attributed to her predecessor). Good stuff! Someone should take note and learn!! Although considering someone doesn't read the newspapers (especially not the foreign ones) he may not have heard! We have a big stick dammit so why should we walk quietly? Because that's good diplomacy.
