it's the length of time you smoke for light smokers that directly impacts risk. someone who has 4 cigs a day for a year compared to the relative risk for a 4-cig a day smoker of 5 years...
everyone in the study was over the age of 35. which can bias the results, since it has been observed that if you quit smoking before your early 30s, you can decrease your risk of disease and come near a non-smoker's risk within 5 years.
oh, did you know that cigarettes that are in a box are worse for you than the soft-packs? yeah.
Samantha's comment triggered a thought-- the trend in Spain is that _everyone_ smokes in their 20s and usually quit by 30. They certainly aren't freaking out about lawsuits and health effects the way americans are. I wonder if there is some specific american culture trigger that keeps us smoking longer? Joe Camel and sexy advertising can't be the only reason.
To answer your question Z, cigarettes in a hard pack are compact. Those in a soft pack have more "wiggle room" and therefore more nicotine falls to the bottom of the package, leaving less in the cigarette itself. And yes, Certain brand hard packs have been coated with preservatives...
Americans live for advertising... I think that's the cultural difference.
