Homelessness finally getting some attention from the Fed Gov't

Homelessness is a problem that can never be truly solved, but a lot more could be done to ameliorate the lives of the homeless and provide them with a helping hand to rise up from the destitution in which they exist. I applaud the efforts of the Bush administration to address this issue!

"The Bush directive boosted a concept called Housing First, pioneered in New York City and Los Angeles about five years ago."
...
"The plan in a nutshell: The cure for homelessness is a home.

"Don't give them just a blanket and a bowl of soup," Mangano says. "Give them housing and services, and eventually that person goes out and gets a job.""

A number of cities (San Francisco, New York City) have had great success with programs that focused on providing housing and assistance. It only makes sense. "Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime."

the coverage probably does. the plan seems to have been around for longer than that. maybe it's getting a bit more push now? in the end i don't care why they're doing it, i'm just glad they are. and for the fact that they are doing it i give them credit!

My mother created and runs a school based health clinic for children who can't afford health care. Every year she has to write for grants to sustain the thing. In her second or third year year, I remember her telling me, "everybody wants to give you money to create something like this, to be able to say 'look what I started'. Far fewer want to give money once it already exists, to keep it going."

Without having read the article, this strikes me that way. It'll make the federal government look good now, but for how long will they nurture the program? and how long can someone live there before they're told by the government that they have to go start fending for themselves?

it sounds good, and I'm glad they've started, but I don't trust this administration to do something truely selfless for their fellow man...

    maybe I'm just jaded...

There was an article in the Minneapolis tribune about a family who were given a house and settled in (Katrina victims) for 6 months. That was decided to be enough time for them to find jobs and boost their bank accounts. The guy flipped out saying "Why should we ever have to pay?? We didn't WANT to move here!".

People like this make me not want to help anyone. I just don't understand how people can live with themselves knowing they didn't earn a damn thing they have...
