People in unusual professions - porn star

Arguments against pornography are usually factually weak. Here's another gem.

"it's a way of life that undermines our dignity."

Now, there's a vague concept - dignity. I assume by "our" you mean humanity. I am a member of this group and it does not undermine my dignity and so you fail!

"Sex should be a private thing, not a spectator sport and the pornography industry is creating a climate which is very unhealthy."

Unhealthy climate? What does this mean? How is it unhealthy? Is this a personal opinion?

If you find better arguments against pornography please post them in the comments section. I'd like to see if there are some that would actually hold up against logic and reason.

most comments I can make regarding this end up falling flat, like you said. I believe if you don't agree with it, you have the right to keep it out of your life. Like TV shows... just block that show on that channel. You control to a large extent what you are exposed to... if you don't like it, turn the other way. Mention you don't like it, but understand that everyone has the right to decide for themselves. (hence why all my opinions only apply to me... I don't hold friends/family accountable to them).

If you look at history, anything that pushes the limits of "our moralities" is mouthed off, until eventually, the action that caused the controversy becomes so mainstream, nobody can imagine what life was like without its presence. What we (general public--I know there's exceptions) consider immoral today is what will likely be completely moral 50 years from now.

speaking like a true republican. although these days it's more libertarian than republican. 'tis a shame the libertarian party is such a non-player. i wonder if it could use civil liberties as a way to foment some support.

yes, i couldn't agree more. it'll be interesting to see where our society will be in 50 years.

I still get a giggle out of the Elvis Presley hip-swerving fiasco on Johnny Carson. And now, girls wear ridiculously trashy lingerie and shake their asses into the camera lens and it's okay.

I don't know much about libertarians... but I do know that what I believe is "true republican"... the current Party has gotten a bit off-track in the last decade or so...

who gets to say sex is a private thing, if they're putting people in glass cages these days?

but then you think way back in history when it was just known and appreciated. i mean sex wasn't as big of a deal, like with the ancient egyptians as it is now. Look at their art for example, well what we call "art." Fine line between art and pornography. And if these art pieces are an example of what happened then, aren't they the first porn stars?? hehe. in a sense i think we go in cycles in how conservative we are.

not that I have anything against pornography (hah!), but surely there are certain types that are less, er, respectable (!) than others, such as trying to make women gag on gigantic cocks, and so on...

i'm with you nell... there's some stuff out there that i can't stomach. still, it should be allowed and as long as it is consensual maybe even encouraged. i liked a comment that jamie gillis, a famous 70-80s male porn star, made how the only true sickness is one that is hidden.

fetishes are strange things... if one's partner is not interested in a particular fetish it becomes tricky to express it. so, how does one not conceal it? it's a conundrum.

still, banning things is the worst way to handle problems. i would bet that the burka is a result of a bunch of men deciding that women's bodies wielded a strange and unexplainable power over them and that the best (easiest?) way to handle it is to make them cover it up. hide those weapons of distraction and influence so that we, men, don't have to deal with them. how primitive.

porn in our society faces pretty much the same problem. ironically feminists are against it too. at least you can count on extremism staying the same no matter who takes it up.

I always viewed the burka as "I am taken, and you are not worthy to view my charms"

    Sam,

though I haven't studied up on it, I always thought the Libertarian party to be Republicans who still think for themselves and don't do whatever the Christian Coalition tells them to. Most notably, they're cool with gay rights. the first time I ever heard of the Libertarian party they were described to me as "Republicans who don't want to kill every gay they see."

and are for less government interference, too, right?

yeah, "true republicans" are actually very similar to libertarians. i think the only difference is that republicans are strong on defense and do believe in gov't whereas the libertarians are a bit more loose there.
