Hmmm, I dunno about that...

So, the story goes that the Ecuadorian coach gave all his players an inspirational story that helped them beat Poland in their first game. The story is available in the link, but basically it's about a family that had enough and was happy, but became rich after a well treated visitor killed their source of income in order to motivate them to better themselves!

That is a terrible story with a terrible moral!

He didn't order the cow killed to motivate them to better themselves. He order it killed because of envy that they should live so free of troubles.

I actually think there was a good lesson in it. The story said "hard work and new challenges" allowed them to better themselves and their situation. Sometimes when you're content you become stagnant. And the only way to improve is to start over from scratch.

Yes, but if you were happy with where/who you were who cares if you're not re-inventing yourself.

But granted, in this case the point was that it didn't matter who they were before because they were supposed to put in "hard work and new challenges" in order to re-invent themselves and win the world cup.

Still, the story automatically presumes that they were better off because they were richer. Who knows. Maybe they lost a son/daughter as they struggled with "hard work and new challenges". Would this be worth the wealth they acquired?
