i think the problem is that they want to include it in the science curriculum. for example, in biology you'd learn about evolution and then about "intelligent design" as an alternative.
in my view the Pennsylvania approach (which is gone at this point) was acceptable - place stickers in the book informing students that evolution is a theory and that there are other possible explanations for origin of species. they may be unscientific, but they are explanations nonetheless.
no, in PA the teachers were having to read the sticker out loud, or something. In addition to there being a sticker. Which i totally would have defaced. And i think the Vatican (a) belives in science or at least doesn't mind it when it does not conflict and (b) is probably smart enough to say, well, do we want a bunch of godless, highly untrustworthy not to mention resentful and possibly communist biochemists "teaching" the bible to our children? and decide no, not so much, we'd rather they go to church four times a week instead.

this debate seriously cracks me up... what's wrong with incorporating it in cultural history class? Or are those classes "less important"...?

I probably would have ripped the sticker out of my book. but that's just me.
thing is... the science teacher would be responsible for teaching this stuff. And if they are not religious, how's that gonna happen?
