Vaccine developed to prevent cervical cancer

Pretty cool stuff. They developed a vaccine against HPV that will eliminate most cases of cervical cancer and genital warts in women.

That's great! What about them boys? Granted, we don't have a cervix. But we're not naturally immune, you know! So, how 'bout it?

And while you're at it how about you rout out some of the other nasties that inhibit the nasty. Or just some of the other nasties, if we're into quantity over quality. I think the Catholic church should donate its endowment towards medical research for this very purpose. "Yea, come to me my flock and be healed!" Now, there's something that'll make you believe. But then they appear stalwart on waiting for the savior.

And hence we come to two men who should be granted sainthood for doing just that - Mr. William Henry Gates III and Warren E. Buffet. Gentlemen, I salute you!

IBM rules!

I am so impressed by IBM. A lot of our modern electronics were invented or designed by them. For example, micro hard drives (hello Ipods) and using copper in microprocessor design to name but a few, off the top of my head. They've been working on nanodrives for some time (basically microscopic punch cards that would allow for a massive increase in storage). And now they developed a new way to design microprocessors that will boost their processing power by up to 100 fold! This is an awesome breakthrough badly needed to propel our communication and processing networks to the next stage. GO IBM!!

Ha! We all know this one...

Whether you like to chase or be chased, whether you do it too much or not enough I think everyone can relate to this one (heh, especially the "don't know why" part).

"When I see the mess that I'm drowning in
I know why I'm here, after where I've been
If the truth be told I would have to say
It was worth the price, that I had to pay
Though they break your heart, and make you cry
I can hardly wait 'till the next comes by
I can hardly wait, don't know why, don't know why
For another try, don't know why, don't know why"

A different life

I love BBC for articles like this. See what life is like for 6 different people in a Mumbai slum.

"Queen quotes Groucho at 80th birthday lunch"

"As Groucho Marx once said 'Anyone can get old -- all you have to do is live long enough." *lol*

Hmmm, I dunno about that...

So, the story goes that the Ecuadorian coach gave all his players an inspirational story that helped them beat Poland in their first game. The story is available in the link, but basically it's about a family that had enough and was happy, but became rich after a well treated visitor killed their source of income in order to motivate them to better themselves!

That is a terrible story with a terrible moral!

Make love not war!

"A lost wartime diary by a female doctor that tells of love, loneliness and death on the Ho Chi Minh Trail". But like any other war, it'll be mostly death and loneliness!

Thailand: What a monarchy could be!

The International Herald Tribune brings us a glimpse into the king's place in Thailand's internal affairs in "Letter from Asia: Honoring a monarch who rules with a whisper".

For all the Paris Hilton fans*

Paris Hilton moves on to singing with a pop-raggae number. If she makes you gag I'd recommend minimizing the video (it's what you'd expect) - the song is actually not half-bad. And it is definitely way better than the electronica-backed Brittany Murphy video available on the same page.

What is up with everyone and their brother wanting to sing? If at least they were original or new I'd understand it, but when they sing just for the sake of doing it (kinda like releasing a parfume) I am not quite sure I get it.

*I know there's plenty of you out there

From earthquakes to terrorism

Heh, well it just goes to show you that you can't be safe anywhere. As much as we try to build up our little world and pretend that we're in control the truth is we never are. That truck is coming for you when it's time and that's it. And you'll be gone like that little bug you squished the other day, perhaps not even noticing.

I am beginning to realize that faith can come from utter helplessness and a need for some sense of reason and security. So when no one can offer that where do you turn? Why, to the sky of course.

This would also explain why it is dangerous to take faith (and unfortunately religion) away from people. They will look for it elsewhere and sadly find it in the worst places.

"Royal's secret for long marriages"

"My mother when I married said you must have separate bathrooms and separate bedrooms. That was the only sure way of keeping a marriage alive because it was an invitation as opposed to just being there and that makes it more romantic."

Novel, but interesting.
